Bacterial Canker : A Hazardous Disease Of Mango
Mango is an important fruit crop in India and other sub-tropical countries of the world. Over 140 fungi (70 diseases) are associated with this fruit . Mango is subject to a number of diseases at all stages of its development. Some of these diseases cause heavy loss and are limiting factor in mango cultivation in some regions. Mango is affected right from the plants in the nursery to the fruits in storage or transit. Hardly any plant organ is immune and almost every part viz. stem, branch, twig, root, leaf, petiole, flower and fruit are affected by various pathogens, yet there are few diseases which are cause of great great loss and the canker is one of them.
Symptoms of Bacterial Canker :
Canker is a serious disease in India. The disease causes fruit drop (10-70%), yield loss (10-85%) and storage rot (5-100%). Many commercial cultivars of mango including Langra, Dashehari, Arnrapali, Mallika and Totapuri are susceptible to this disease. The disease is found on leaves, petioles, twigs, branches and fruits. The disease first appears as minute water soaked irregular lesions on any part of leaf or leaf lamina. Due to vein limitations the spots become angular and result in cankerous patches, which sometime dry up. Several lesions coalesce to form irregular necrotic cankerous patches. In severe infections the leaves turn yellow and drop off. Cankerous lesions also appear on petioles, twigs and young fr
uits. The water soaked lesions also develop on fruits which later turn dark brown to black. There may be only a few lesions on each fruit but more lesions on tender fruits may lead to sever fruit drop. They often burst open, releasing highly contagious gummy ooze containing bacterial cells. In India the disease remains dormant during November-March. Cankers on twigs initiate fruit infection by the end of April during dry weather. The disease spreads rapidly during rains and becomes severe in July-August. Fresh infection on leaves and twigs develop only after rains.
Three sprays of Stuff after first visual symptom at 10 day intervals and then monthly sprays are effective in controlling the disease. It provides long duration control of 7-10 days. It contains plant nutrients Zn & Mn, which improves root growth in plant.
